French zoo welcomes Sumatran tiger cubs
A zoo in northern France welcomed two Sumatran tiger cubs, a /”big plus/” for their conservation of the endangered species, they say.

The cubs, named Rimba and Toba, were born on March 22 as a result of the European Breeding Program of Sumatran tigers.

They are the second litter for female tiger Menya, who was paired with male Argo. At a month-old, the cubs weigh around 4.2 kilos (9.25 pounds).

Amiens Metropolo Zoo’s veterinarian Pierre-Louis Fiszman said fewer than 400 individual Sumatran tigers remain in the wild today.

The IUCN red list categorizes them as a ‘critically endangered species’.

Native to the island of Sumatra, their numbers have plummeted due to habitat loss and deforestation caused by logging and agricultural practices especially for palm oil plantations. Illegal hunting is also a threat, as these tigers are revered for their skins and considered a threat to livestock.

Around 125 captive Sumatran tigers exist around zoos in Europe. Amiens Zoo now has five of the species, after the birth of Rimba and Toba.
