Dozens of activists clashed with anti-riot police in Manila on Wednesday (May 1) after they were stopped from holding a demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in the Philippine capital. Police used water cannon to quell the activists as they tried to get past a barricade. The protesters later demonstrated several hundred meters from the embassy and smashed an effigy of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., calling him a puppet of Washington. Ties between the Philippines and the U.S. have strengthened under Marcos amid escalating tensions with China over a group of resource-rich islands in the South China Sea. Earlier on Wednesday, hundreds of activists and laborers marched near the gates leading to the presidential palace in Manila to call on President Marcos to increase the minimum wage of ordinary workers by 150 pesos (1.70).
