Excited children and adults watched the youngling run alongside his mother inside their enclosure.

“We are leaders in the reproduction of a species that has been incredibly decimated worldwide,” said Buin Zoo director Dr. Ignacio Idalsoaga, who added that this was the third white rhino born at the zoo.

White rhinos are facing threats of poaching and habitat loss in South Africa, with 500 killed last year for their horns, according to Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a global conservation charity. – Report from Reuters
