On The Scene: The U.N. cultural agency on Monday (September 18) listed an ancient Guatemalan city first occupied as early as 800 B.C. as a World Heritage Site, the third site in the country to gain the recognition. Tak’alik Ab’aj, dated to the earliest known major Mesoamerican civilization known as Olmec, was one of the most important economic and cultural centers in southern Guatemala during pre-Columbian times. The park is located 600 meters above sea level on the well-drained slopes of the volcanic chain that runs along the Pacific coast.
